Jamie Benson

Ex-Hepburn star, back on the scene with a cover of Lisa Loeb's Stay, talks to FRONT about the Beatles, tattoos and, er, S Club 7

Interview: Edward West
Photography: Enric Galceran

Is it true you were born on the road?

Well, my mum and dad were a cabaret act. My mum was nine months pregnant and they were doing a gig in Bridgend. During the set she started having contractions so went to hospital for a checkup afterwards, and out I popped. But I wasn't literally born 'on the road'.

What do you think of Paul leaving S Club to join a heavy-metal band?

It's going to be a bit weird for people to try and take that in, but good on him, whatever he wants to do, and whatever makes him happy.

Is it true that your dad was friends with John Lennon and Paul McCartney?

Yeah, and on his 21st birthday they bought him a case of champagne and sat there drinking it. It was the first time he was ever drunk - and they got him absolutely slaughtered.

Do you have a tattoo on your back?

No, but I've got a Japanese symbol on my ankle.

What does it mean?

It means 'faithful and loyal'.

You sure it means that?

It probably means egg fried rice or something like that. When I go to a takeaway I'll just show them my ankle and say 'I'll have one of those'.
